View Full Version : How To Make a Sock Monkey

This is my official, unofficial March submission.

I say unofficial because I can't follow the proper submission guidelines, making me ineligible for the submission contest part. However! Since nobody has made a submission at all and there are several members who have said that they wish to make one I am officially suggesting that making a sock monkey be a craft of the month idea.

I'm posting two links that I found for two variations of sock monkeys. I hope that links are allowed. I am not taking credit, in any way, for these instructions, but since they are posted on the internet, anybody can find them and use them...

The first link is for the Original Rockford Red Heel sock monkey:
http://tipnut.com/projectfiles/redsockmonkeypattern.pdf

and the second is for a slightly updated version:
http://www.sockmonkey.net/How_To_Make_New_Sock_Monkey.html

( If this submission is not allowed, go ahead and delete it Nathan.)

Ah-ha! and now I know that the booklet I got was originally from 1958. That explains a lot....
I couldn't find any copyright information in the book, or at least, not any dates.

I wouldn't have been able to tell you, so it is a good thing that you found it yourself!

Since I woke up and couldn't go back to sleep, I had nothing else to do.

Oh my goodness. I didn't even notice the timestamp! No wonder you couldn't sleep, you were on the computer!

Once she found out how uncomfortable the keyboard is as a pillow, she doesn't sleep in front of the computer anymore. =o)

This happens to me usually at the end of a school year. It won't happen again until August.

I know Amy doesn't get here as often as she would like, so I peeked at her blog and found it. She has it divided into two parts. Here is part one. (https://docs.google.com/fileview?id=0B3GFMcV2LDnJYWZlNjkzMjMtNzcyMy00YjIwL ThkYzItZGRiMDRhYzdhYmI4&hl=en) And here is part two (https://docs.google.com/fileview?id=0B3GFMcV2LDnJOWNhY2JiMGEtOWI1MC00YjU0L TgzOWYtYzE3ZmFlZGJlNjgy&hl=en). Although, unless I overlooked it, I don't see any directions for cutting the second sock (arms, tail and ears).

Hmm I left out part of the how to?? rut ro
Oh goodness I did! OOPS I suck! LOL

Honestly the directions on the actual red heel socks are the easiest and best!

I'm pretty sure that is what I follow, which I am also pretty sure is the same as the 'updated' version that I linked to in my first post. I think it is very funny that there are directions for making a toy on the sock package!

In my humble opinion, it is the other one. This one (http://www.sockmonkey.net/How_To_Make_New_Sock_Monkey.html). I'm pretty sure that the drawings on this tutorial are directly from the sock package.

I've made one monkey using the original instructions and wasn't happy with it, but I used crappy, dollar store socks. I fully believe that was the problem. I've never posted that one:whistling2:. I intend to make an original one using my last pair of brown official red-heel socks, but I haven't gotten around to it.

OH! Nice to know I should use the real red heel socks!

No, seriously. I was thinking of a different kind of sock.:001_huh:

My suggestions if you use non-red heeled socks are: Make sure that they are not too stretchy. If they are really stretchy socks your stuffed animal will be very oddly shaped and probably way bigger than intended. Trust me. Also, make sure that the toes of the socks are slightly rounded. The one that I didn't post had squared off toes which gave my monkey a big butt and a weird shaped head. Be careful with stripes because you will probably want to line them up and that is a pain in the rear, so not a good choice for a first time, in my opinion.
It makes me happy that somebody else seems to have been bitten by the sock monkey bug!!!

Of course I want the first one stripes! http://www.avowners.com/forum/smileys/doh354.gif

I know this might sound odd, but I want to make the sock, and then make the sock monkey. I don't know WHY I have to make something so hard!:laughing:

Nothing you say sounds odd to me any more!:laughing::laughing:

Go ahead and use stripes! Just take extra care to line them up, that's all.
I wouldn't even know where to begin making a sock.

I want to make one with a pair of knee socks! I think long, dangly arms and legs would look great.

Speaking of monkeys, the Boss says, "Hey, make the scarf (the broomstick scarf) long like that green one that monkey is wearing on tv.":001_huh: I said, "Dear. Everything looks long on a monkey."

LOL You def gotta make a red heel at least once if you are a sock monkey maker...me, I almost can't go back to the 'modern' socks now...I just love the texture and "forgiveness" of the red heels.

But I like kooky monkeys too, the ones that dont totally line up right or what not :)

Well, I'm not doing an itty bitty one Amy.(remember the itty bitty Patriotic bear) I made that one, and never did another and I don't want to!

Well, you are right, I need to make at least one red heel one. Okay, where do you purchase a red heel?

Angela
12-08-2010, 05:24 PM
That's funny Amy, I don't share the love that you have for the red-heel socks. They were okay but I found that they ran (kind of like panty hose) My second one wasn't so difficult, I guess I knew the second time...
I still have a pair of pink and a pair of brown socks left! :D

I want a sock monkey that can open a bottle of wine with its teeth.

Problem is, I don't want to make a sock monkey. I'd rather buy one. And I want one small enough to put on my tree.

:) Thats doable :) They make tiny baby socks that get turned into baby sock monkeys. THe problem is they are TINY (like 5 inches) and cost just as much to make as the big ones bc they are so costly and hard to do! LOL
