View Full Version : Making teddy bears (hopefully)

I have an old hoodie that use to be my (almost) 16 year old's, then she reluctantly passed it down to her sister. When she outgrew it, I saved it and then forgot about it. I have rediscovered it and I am hoping that I can make two teddy bears out of it. One for each girl. I'm just not positive that I will have enough material.
I hope this works. So far I have copied the pattern. (Gotta start somewhere!) I figure if I post it, I have to work on it!
Wish me luck....
I'll call this: Before

Good luck with it. I'll keep pestering you until you post the after pictures.

(Meanwhile, I better get back to work on the barn window project I started last summer. eh-hem!! :whistling2:)

Are the teddy bears going to be Christmas presents for the girls?

The plan is that they will be Christmas presents, but if today is any indication of things to come, I may set fire to the whole project before then!!!! I had to copy the pattern three times. Which is an ordeal because the copier is not easy to get at. They are going to be very small bears. VERY small. But I'm okay with that because the last thing my kids need is another stuffed animal. I just hope that I can work with such little pieces without putting the needle through my finger!
I have to quit for today because the kids will be coming home soon. I plan to get the pieces cut (at the very least) tomorrow. Then the fun part, sewing them up!

Alright, I have gotten all the pieces cut out. I will start sewing tomorrow. Too much to do today. It took almost an hour and a half to cut these :censored: pieces. I am starting to think that I have made these teddies a bit too small. We'll have to see how the sewing goes.
Here's a photo of two teddy bear's worth of pieces. The pen in between the sets is to show just how tiny I cut them. Hindsight is 20/20.....

Wow. I'm impressed. Those are going to be so cute.

Are you sewing them by hand?

I will be trying to use the machine. If the pieces aren't too small. It didn't seem that small when I was photocopying them!!!! I don't have the patience to hand sew them. I will do my best to hand embroider the eyes, nose and mouth though.
(first I have to string popcorn so we can finish the tree...)

So much to do, so little time.

My wife, squiggles60, made hand-sewn Teddy Bears to sell for several years. They looked better hand-sewn than machine-sewn.

I have a feeling that mine wouldn't!!! I think that I would run out of patience and end up rushing it! I've made so many teddy bears over the years and feel guilty for never making any for my own children.

I read it the way she did and it does sound funny. My kids would have laughed about that too.

Elaine I never said I can't hand sew the bears. I said that I don't have the patience. If the pieces are too small for the machine, I will sew by hand. I've come too far to pitch the project now!!!!!!
I certainly don't want to sew them by hand. I'll admit that easily!!! :D
We'll see how it goes. I'm not sure if I am going to be able to work on them much today. We got our first snowfall overnight and it is REALLY heavy. I've shovelled a little, my father in law shovelled a little, I think he just went out to do more, then I'll go out and do more! Did I mention that it is heavy?? It's raining on the heavy snow right now, making it worse!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
At least the tree is done... I got the popcorn strung yesterday.

Barb, I thought you might get a giggle out of that.

AWESOME!! My father in law just finished the driveway! Now I'm going to get the bears.......

We had some bad weather and roads last night. Then it warmed up to 36, but we're under a blizzard warning now. They're telling people that they need to be home and off the roads by 1:00 this afternoon when it starts.

Unfortunately, most employers don't let people go home just because of treacherous weather.

You must be getting the same storm that's going across the U.S. Angela.

I wouldn't be surprised if it is the same storm. It seems to be finished here now.

So, while pinning my teeny teddies I decided that there is no way on earth that I will be able to use a machine to sew them up. The book divides the pinning/sewing into three steps. I finished step one. I stopped because I am starting to get a headache! I'm not sure if it is related to staring at the needle and thread or not. Either way, I've stopped for the day. It would appear that most of the tedious stuff is taken care of. (including the driveway!!! yayyyy)
Now I think I'll tidy up my kitchen, then start reading the book I took out of the library that is due in just over a week....

Angela

The pinning/sewing is divided into five steps. Where did I learn how to count??
I have steps 1-4 done. Step five includes sewing the front and back together, attaching the head and sewing on the bottoms of the feet. However, I have run out of time for today. I won't be able to work on them again until Monday, but if all goes well, I should have them completed on Thursday. I have a feeling that the bottoms of the feet are going to cause problems. They are satin and so are the paw pads and inside the ears. I didn't know how badly satin frays... I am hoping that the feet won't fray much. I don't think it is a huge deal if it does because I have lots leftover and I can cut new ones, but I hope it won't come to that.
I was going to take a progress picture, but it would just look like a jumble of pink right now. I will post one just before and/or after I stuff them.
They are a fun little project :)

How are the bears coming along Angela?

I haven't been able to work on them :( I went out shopping for my daughter on Monday with my in-laws. I thought we were going to one store. Five hours later, we finally got home.
Yesterday I had a million and three things to do (including finishing a library book that is due today!) so I didn't get to it. (I got my book done though!)
I'm hoping to work on them today but I have to bake a cake and wrap presents (my daughter turns 16 tomorrow). I can see the end though so I'm not worried that it won't get done. I'll keep you posted. Thanks. :D

16 - so does that mean she gets her drivers license soon? Good luck with the birthday party. I hope she has a great time.

Barb

Angela
12-16-2009, 05:58 PM
I picked up the driver's handbook for her today. Shhh.... don't tell her though. ;)
Her party was on the 5th. We do it early because if we don't, everyone has Christmas party commitments. It was still a small turn out, but those who did come were the ones she wanted the most, so it was all good.
We never give her any gifts at her party (either of the kids) we wait until the actual birthday. Plus the party itself is a gift.
In our house, the birthday person get (within reason) whatever they want for dinner. This year she asked for hot wings and french fries (no veggies). Talk about easy to please!! Although I told her that this is the most expensive hot wing meal in history.... Our deep fryer died on us, so we had to go out and get a new one in time... That makes dinner cost $134.33! Mind you, that includes a whole bag of potatoes, we'll have lots left over.
I never got anything wrapped today, so my battle plan for tomorrow is:wrap, ice the cake, disguise the lousy icing job with sprinkles, then work on bears. Oh, and I need to run the vacuum through the house at some point too.....
I still think that the bears will be done before Christmas. Maybe not tomorrow as originally planned though.

Angela
12-18-2009, 01:23 PM
Well, I never vacuumed. I did get a little work done on the bears. I still have to attach the heads, and the bottoms of the feet. Plus stuffing and details. My sixteen year old only had a half-day at school so she is already home. I forgot that the kids would be home after today!!!!! I'll find a way to finish these little guys on time even if it means locking myself in my bedroom!

gma2rjc
12-18-2009, 05:57 PM
If you lock yourself in your bedroom, that's when they'll need you the most.

What you need to do is say, "Hey girls, come help me clean my room!" They'll avoid you like the plague.

LOL! That's funny Barb. Just today they were hovering around me, bugging me and I said that I have a lot to do today and if they kept getting in my way, I would put them to work. I've hardly seen them since!

Buuuttttt... the house has been vacuumed, the bathroom is finally clean, the dishes are being washed as I type and one load of laundry is in the washer, another is in the dryer and sheets and towels are waiting their turn. I'm getting lots done today! (I want to play video games tonight with my husband and again tomorrow when his brother comes over so I need to get all this done today!)

The bears WILL be done in time. I have no doubt about that.

gma2rjc
12-19-2009, 03:47 PM
It's looking like you won't be playing any games tomorrow. There's work that needs to be done at my house and it would be a better use of your time if you come over here to clean. :shifty:

Just kidding.

I'm looking forward to seeing those little bears. You still have 4 or 5 days to complete them. Are they going under the Christmas tree with a "from: Santa" tag on them?

Barb

Are they going under the Christmas tree with a "from: Santa" tag on them?
Barb

Absolutely NOT! I want full credit!!!
Although I'd still get it with the oldest. Not sure about the 11 year old. She hasn't said anything, but she also has not gone to see Santa either.......

I intend to wrap them with a tag that says "Love, Mommy" (yes, they still call me "Mommy" from time to time!)

Now I have to go look at a map to see how far you are from me......
Edited to add: I just checked "Google Maps". Driving from Toronto to Grand Rapids is aobut six hours. By the time I got there, if I left right now and didn't stop, it would almost be my bedtime. So you'll just have to clean your place yourself!

sigh

They look very silly.

They are stuffed, but they have no faces or ears yet. When I went to attach the ears, they fell apart! the satin had frayed too much and when I went to turn them right side out, they just came apart. I was already frustrated because the bears don't look the way that they did in my mind and this was the final straw. I put them away and haven't gone back to them. Today once the wrapping is done, I may take them out again. I have material left so I can make new ears. Hopefully once I give them faces they will look better. I think it is because I didn't use plush, I used velour. They look malnourished. My husband got a good chuckle out of them, so I guess that they are good for something.

As it stands right now, I am not proud of these little guys. :icon_sad:
I'll still take and post a picture later. Who knows though, a little personality (with ears and a face) may make a world of difference. At least that is what I am hoping.

You're right, once you get the faces and ears on, you'll like them a lot better. You've put so much time and effort into them. It would be a shame to not finish them.

If the ears keep giving you trouble, sew a little hat on their heads.

Well? Is this a sore subject or is it okay to ask how they turned out?

Barb

Angela
12-27-2009, 09:37 AM
Nope, it's not a sore subject.
But since I last posted, the wind was kind of taken out of my sails and I haven't gone back to them. The kids know nothing about them so it will still be a nice surprise when I do finish them. I am going to re make the ears with no satin. That will solve that problem. I'll still post pics. No matter how goofy they look.

Two goofy looking teddy bears, coming up!

Here they are at their goofiest. (The pop can is for size reference)

And here they are finished. In my opinion, faces and ears helped A LOT. But I still think that the one on the right is silly looking......

They are in gift bags as I type this waiting for the girls to come home from school. :D
I am never making bears this little again.

Well, you just got the seal of approval from my house. My 3 yr. old grand daughter just saw the bears on my screen and said, "I want that! I want that mamma! That's mine!"

So there you have it!

They turned out very cute Angela. I think your girls will love them. They look cuter than some of the Build-A-Bear animals I've seen.

Awwww... your granddaughter just made me feel good! If these bears hadn't given me such trouble, I'd make one for her. Unfortunately, they were such a pain, I will NOT be making another one! Plus, they have beads for eyes which is not good for a three year old....

My 11 year old likes hers. Especially after I told her where the material came from. My 16 year old isn't home yet.

Edited to Add: My oldest walked through the door as I hit 'send'. She smiled and said "Awww! He's CUTE!" then I told her where the material came from and she announced it's cuteness again!

Ahhhh... I guess the aggravation was worth it. :D
