Do you shop at Thrift Stores?
I love thrift stores. I grew up with very little clothes. So to be able now to buy great clothes at amazing prices feels so good. I have a brother and sister in law that would never buy used clothes. I just don't get it. You wash the clothes and they are clean. The new clothes you are trying on in the store have been tried on by others. Anyway, how many of you buy most of your stuff in thrift stores? What are some of your better buys? We have amazing thrift stores here in SWNJ. If I moved I would come back for atleast 2 of the stores to shop at. These are as big as major grocery stores. Not just clothes but everything you can imagine. I've also bought and sold from thrift stores. How about you?

I do some shopping at thrift stores. There is one good one that is within walking distance that my kids love. Yup, you read that right. My 16 year old has gone twice, so far, with some of her birthday money to get "new" clothes. They get better jeans there than they would get new (because I won't spend more than $25 on a pair) and they only cost about $8! My kids aren't really "into" name brands, but they admit that there are a few that they like and their favourite "name" of jeans turns up OFTEN in this store. (which is a challenge since they both take the same size  -my 16 year old is super scrawny, I mean skinny and my 11 year old looks more like a thirteen year old)
We, especially the kids get TONS of books at this store too. 99 for a paperback. My kids read a lot.

My mom thinks I'm cheap.:icon_rolleyes:

Aside from what you already said, Cindy, about washing what people have already tried on, another good thing is that you know that these items are going to hold up in the wash. You don't often get brand new items at a thrift store, so you just know they've been through the wash a few times already. Pre-shrunk and broken in!

I love thrift stores too! you can find really great stuff there sometimes. I recently bought a glider rocker chair for $25!! I like to get kids clothes there too.
we also have a consingment store for just baby/kid stuff and thats a really great place to get clothes and bedding and shoes and everything you need for a baby/kid. I've sold some stuff to them too. they only take name brand clothes in very good used condition so when I buy stuff there i know its been looked over for stains and stuff.

I prefer to shop thrift stores! The clothes are already pre-shrunk so when you try them on they will fit exactly the same when you wear them at home. I still buy Gap clothes and other brand names that I love but for a tiny fraction of the price. I love having quite a few clothes and not spending a lot of money.

I wish we had some really good thrift stores nearby. Unfortunately the ones we have just don't seem that great. There is one kids resale store that I can sometimes find good deals at, but it's very hit or miss. My hubby is weird...he doesn't mind if I get used clothes for me or the kids, but he doesn't want any for himself...dork. He's very picky though, and doesn't buy new clothes often (and usually just spends the gift certificates that his dad gives him for his birthday and Christmas, lol).

We have a goodwill outlet by us and we probably spend like $100/month there. its ridiculous. hunting for treasure is so addictive! You buy clothes buy the pound! i think its around $1.59/pound, but it goes down if you buy over a certain amount of pounds. You dig through bins. I find tons of nice stuff. gymboree, gap, old navy, hanna andersson.. its awesome! you have to dig through crap but its in there. Imagine, how much does a kids shirt weigh? under half a pound, i'd bet. PENNIES for these clothes! I bought a ton of wool sweaters to turn into longies too :)

I LOVE shopping at thrift stores as well. Before DH and I moved, there was one thrift store near where we use to live. I loved the place!! I could find clothes that were so close to new, and some even had the tags still on them! I also found some neat toys, also like new, that were like $0.25 or $0.50, for things you could get at walmart that same day for $10!

Where we currently live, I have yet to find a decent thrift store. The one in town didn't have any organization to it, so it was hard to find what you were looking for (at the time time was clothes for DS1). Once I found them, nothing was marked... no price tags, not even color coded stickers... I haven't been back since.

My MIL runs a 2nd hand store & you would be surprised how much stuff people donate that are brand new. If it's good stuff she gives it to me :)

I LOVE thrift stores :). I live in an area with wealthier families and I find NICE things at our's all the time... I have been a bit frustrated lately as they have marked things up a ton (used jeans for 7.99! I can get them on sale/clearance new for that), but their sale days rock. One store has certain color tags $.99 on Sundays and Mondays. I always go to the ones by my mom's house when I come to visit her and get great deals as well. My house is full of toys 75% of them came from the thrift store for pennies. One of my best purchases this year was an Obermyer coat in like new condition except for one small seam that was seperating near the hanging hook (easy fix) for $6 for my dd... new it would have been $150. Also got a Hanna Andersen dress for her for $3.

My friend lives in Bradenton Florida and said the thrift stores and pawn shops there are unbelievable. She even bought jewelry at one of them.
