We're big thrift store shoppers. We also score clothes off of Freecycle when they come up in sizes we can use.

We score pretty well on freecycle sometimes, too!

But I have to admit that my first love is thrift stores! I've been thrifting for forever. I was born to a thrifty Scot who taught me by lifestyle that something shiny new is not always the treasure it looks like it is! I did go through a stage when I resented not having the new things, especially clothes. But as an adult I am so grateful my Mom didn't change her values to suit my whims.

I think that by the time clothes get to thrift stores, not only are they broken in, but you can tell which ones are made to hold up. And if they don't hold up, I haven't lost much! I love it that our clothes are unique and eclectic. I'm a bit of a clothes horse and I like it that I can afford lots of neat things. I don't stress out that my son wants to change clothes like 3 times a day or that my daughter HAS to be change because she keeps getting her clothes wet. (She plays in any water she can find!)

Everyone in my house wears thrift store clothes. My husband changed from a casual dress job to a business casual job about 4 years ago and we were actually able to find all the clothes he needed at thrift stores! I think he likes it that I don't buy them new, even though he isn't always crazy about what I bring home. HeeHee! I don't buy underpants or undershirts at the thrift store. Occassionally I find bras and socks but not often. So I guess I buy a few neccessities new.

Recently I've been buying a lot of clothes and linens to repurpose. I've converted garments I liked but didn't fit into something I could wear. I've made lots of cute stuff for my little girl (dresses, diapers, wools, leggings) out of fabrics I love but garments/linens I didn't need.

Our local thrift store has upped their prices a LOT! It is pretty disappointing but I understand they are dealing with the recession and increased needs to meet as much as anyone is. So I try to remember that the money I give them goes to a pretty good cause. I love their bag sale days ($10 for a paper bag stuffed with clothes) but those are random so I don't always get there when they have on. They have bag sales ($8/bag) on every Thursday evening but with two little ones and a hubby that works until 5 or 6 it is kind of tough to get there. The local Salvation Armies have half off day every Wednesday so that is the day I like to go there.

Okay, more info than anyone ever wanted. All to say, fellow thrifters, I'm one of you!

I have 5 thrift stores I shop at. I go at least once a week and have a relationship with the people who work or volunteer at each one. Since mosaic art is so much about upcycling I get a lot of my supplies at thrift stores and they all have lists of what I am looking for and call me when it comes in. One store has a back area where they put stuff they don't think will sell and I have to take the truck pretty often to pick up stuff. I get all the bowling balls for gazing balls at one of my thrift stores, pick them up once a week. They also save back things that they think no one else will buy and give it to me, or furniture that needs a lot of tlc because they know hubby will upcycle it. Sometimes I leave with a truckload and only pay a couple dollars. So much fun.

I love my thrift stores. I hate to shop except for thrift stores, craft stores, dollar stores, rummage sales and flea markets.

We have a flea market booth so I get a lot of good stuff for it from the thrifts. If I could buy groceries there I would be in heaven LOL. When my mosaic friends visit we always hit the thrift shops and if we visit them we go to theirs. I loved some of them in Canada, much different than ours.

Isn't it great when someone compliments your clothes or something in your house and you can say, oh I paid a quarter for that! So often they look at you like you are out of your mind LOL.

Yeah? How are they different? I've never been to a thrift store in the States.

Really? Thrift stores are different up here in Canada? Hm.

I have bought a lot of my daughters clothes either from Kijiji or at thrift stores. I also get second hand from one of my SILs. I also get clothes and books for myself there, and have found some toys. I love it! It's like treasure hunting! And I'm trying to learn to sew better and be able to upcycle some things, I just don't have the eye for it...but I'm trying to learn! I have some sweaters and things to make into longies.

I remember being younger and going into thrift stores to get things for halloween costumes, and getting other clothes in good condition to wear. I didn't want to say it then where I'd bought it, but now I don't care. In fact, one of my friends said I should write a book on how to save money with kids! lol. She thinks that all my ideas (including cloth diapers) are original...nope, just from living and joining online forums!

Heck yes! Unfortunately my current town doesn't have one apparently, too hoity-toity for one I guess. I'm also a big fan of places like Big Lots, Marshalls/TJ Maxx, etc
