"I know" Ahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
My (now 16 year old) daughter did that too! Except she was only three so it was still cute. She has pretty strawberry blonde hair and people would always comment on it. They still do, but not so much now that she is a 'scary' teenager in a Metallica hoodie. Anyhow, I guess she was so used to hearing it.. Random lady said " You have very pretty hair" My daughter literally flipped her hair back and sighed "I know". At 3! My response was similar to PennyPinchingPixie and we got a reminder about manners, but the lady was laughing and said something about how she must hear it all the time.

She sure did. She went through a phase a few years later where whenever she would catch sight of her reflection she would say "hello beautiful" to it. even in a mall window! (We still tease her about that!)

I haven't noticed any "autopilot" responses yet..... I'm worried!

Oh you just wait...the 'auto-responses' are just getting interesting at 16! LOL My daughter has gorgeous big blue eyes...so the EYE ROLL started very young...and she doesnt' do it just as she's turning around, so you don't always catch it...no she WANTS you to see it, so she very VERY dramatically starts the roll and THEN turns, so you see the entire roll....still at 20....and her best 'auto-response' since I can remember is "Oh I know"...to everything! From 'oh it's lovely outside'..."Oh I know..." to..."you are simply gorgeous"...."oh I know"....ARGH!!!!

I'm guility of being on auto pilot....usually in the mornings...but never in public...LOL

But seriously I have tried to stress to my girls they need to be aware of what's going on around them when they're out in public, so they can stay away from dangerous situations.......this incident was an utter fail.....

Oh and we got laughs from the woman at the store...but only when both me and hubby jumped on her for manners and teen who didn't know what she said....woman's first reaction though was taken aback....yesh just glad it wasn't an honest response....at 3 it's cute...not so cute at 17!

I'll have to pay attention. Maybe I just "auto-ignore" them!

I do get the eyeroll/snotty look from time to time. Sometimes I ignore it sometimes I call her on it. I pick my battles....
Gotta love how she makes sure you catch it! (see, it's funny 'cuase it's not my daughter! )

Pixie, I'll bet the woman was pleased that you and Dad jumped all over her. She probably left thinking that there is hope.....

My dear past Mother in law was the best grandma we could ask for. She was also a country living women. Simple life is what I call it. She opted not to have any dentures and she only had one tooth in her head. My son was looking at grandma's tooth. He blurted out "grandma it's ok just wait a new one will be here soon". We all laughed for days.

One day when we were butchering chickens, grandpa was keeping his eye on the chickens and Levi my son 3 year old. They had just pulled the head off the chicken, and it rolled toward Levi, he moved back. He backed up again when the chicken rolled his way. Then Levi went around the corner of the barn to get away from the chicken. Soon afterwords the chicken rolled around the corner. Levi squealed as loud as he could. Grandpa wanted to help, but found himself laughing our loud. He then scooped up Levi and brought him into the house. Where he tried to tell us what happened, but was laughing so hard he couldn't get the words out.

I'm just giggling my hiney off right now...good golly. I do love my kids...they are really honestly the best kids...I've gotten compliments over the years due to their good behavior and polite responses...(i.e. Yes sir, no sir/ma'am...no thank you...please...etc.) and how well behaved they are at functions that were not necessarily 'kid friendly'...however, now that they are older, I occasionally will say to (for example) my 22 year old son 'where exactly did you hide your manners...I worked hard on those...ROFL!

That being said...my wonderful children...they do have a way of shifting personalities as soon as we get in private. I called my daughter 'Cybil' for a long time...HAHAHA All manners, decent behavior GONE as we walk into the house...it's "Mooommmmmmm...i don't WANNNTTTTT to clean my ROOOOMMMMMM" or 'MOTHER are you SERIOUSLY wanting ME to clean that toilet???? EWWWWWW'....ho hum.......

Okay I'm with Levi...ROFL

My husbands' g'ma was 'a good old gal' as well...grew up very simply. She 'had' dentures, but didn't like them...so she didn't wear them. First time we met, she told us she had to 'get her good teeth' so we could take pix. Years later, my kids looking at the pix said 'who's that lady, is she great-g'mas younger sister'??? (guess the 'good teeth' took a few years off her! LOL)

Oh my goodness! The poor little guy must have thought the chicken was chasing him! He could be afraid of chickens for life!!!! How old is he now?

Funny how they change behind closed doors isn't it? When we went to our oldest's first ever meet-the-teacher night we were positive (and not even remotely joking) that she had the wrong child in mind because the teacher said that our daughter was so quiet. At home she never shuts up. Still! We purposely didn't encourage the younger one to talk early. And she didn't, we think, because her sister did all the talking for her!
Yup, they are pretty good in public, but at home.... that is when bodily functions are at their loudest -often followed by giggles and rarely an 'excuse me'.... Of course Dad isn't much help in that department... At least not from my point of view....

ROFLLLL I have to agree with the loud bodily functions~ What is it that makes those 'sounds' force children and (most) adult men into hysterics?
