if you sell in another state, and do not have a brick and mortar presence in that other state, then no sales tax is due, it's a violation of the interstate commerce rules. there is no federal sales tax...yet.

Except that Oregon and Washington have a reciprocity agreement, so I collect and pay sales tax.

No, I live in Oregon. But I also sell in Washington. Almost every show that I do in Washington requires a business license to sell. The terms of the business license is that you collect and pay state sales tax.
It's really not even difficult. They send me a chart that show what the taxes are for each dollar amount, and I add it on. I keep track of it in a spread sheet, and at the end of the year I pay it. The folks over there are really helpful with the forms and everything.

If you're selling paper crafts, go ahead and scan, you will pick up more of the details than a picture - for everything else, you'll want to take a picture. You can make a lightbox really easily out of things you can find at the dollar store and badda bing, you've got professional looking pictures of your crafts to sell.

We live in Missouri, but at shows in Kansas, Kansas Dept of Revenue came to the shows to make sure we were collecting sales tax and paying it to the state of Kansas.

[QUOTE] I do not have a digital camera but was told a scanner would work just as well, and are less expensive. I'm not into all of this electronic stuff so I would appreciate any advice any one could give. Any recommendations?

Digital cameras are not that expensive. Even a cheap one can take decent photos. Plus, they're so easy to use!
A scanner isn't going to do you much good. As everyone knows, anything connected with a printer is usually a hassle to deal with. That is not the route you want for posting craft pictures online.
Just get a simple digital camera. It's COMPLETELY worth the investment.

Or make friends with a compulsive upgrader and get their old one! I'll bet lots of people have "old" cameras lying around that they don't use anymore. Get the word out that you are looking for an inexpensive second hand digital camera, you've got nothing to lose and a camera to gain!

Yup I 'upgraded' from a point and shoot small camera to a nicer fuji camera bc an online friend upgraded hers. A basic digital camera can cost under 100 bucks.
