Default Paypal fees?

Do you charge for paypal fees? I am unsure how to handle this. I feel like I am penny pinching by asking someone to pay the fee because per item it isn't usually that much. But add them up for a month and it's a lot of money. Is there away around the fees? Someone said to send the money as a gift? Don't know if this is true and how long could that last?

Thanks for any paypal advice!

Those fees add up FAST. In fact I am about to raise my prices to help cover it. The more biz u do it seems the mroe pp fees go up and can be up to several dollars!

I think if u keep it under a certain amount here are no fees...not sure.

That's what my family has been saying to do. Just add it into the cost of the item. It's tough because adding shipping to the price scares people away sometimes. I can't understand how someone could think an item of clothing could be $3 including shipping from the east coast to the west coast.

Have you heard about gifting the money?

if you're running your site as a business the money shouldn't be sent as a "personal payment". I've always just added the fee to the cost of the item.

Depending on what type of purchase it is I may charge a small fee. Normally I don't. Did you know if you have a paypal debit card and you use it you receive a credit for each purchase you make using the card as a credit card. I do this and I have basically eliminated the fees. Sure they charge a fee when you get paid by someone. However if you use the card you basically get that money right back at the end of the month.

Totally agree. If they send as "gift" they loose all their paypal protection and i do believe it is against PP rules to ask customers to pay for an item as "gift".

First thing is if your PayPal account is Personal then you should change it to premier/business account. The reason for this is simple PayPal fees are 2.5% of the sale price then when you have a premier/business account and you use your debit card as a Visa/MC you earn 1.5% cash back which reduces the fees.

Next thing is if you had to take credit card payments through a merchant account which has to go into a business checking account which has higher fees. Merchant accounts charge 3-5% transaction fees and you need a terminal which can cost $200 -$2000 depending on you merchant account company.

Another thing is its illegal to add credit card fees to sales. So with a Merchant account you would have higher fees and have to raise your prices to cover the cost. For those reasons I use a Premier PayPal account and just absorb the left over fees after I get my 1.5% cash back. I find that eBay fees are way to high and avoid sales on eBay because of that.

Add it into the cost, if the fee will be $1.32 add $1.50 to the cost

Not only that but if you get CAUGHT they can charge you fees for ALL bank transactions that were sent as 'gifts'. It's in the TOS. I know a few people that learned the hard and $$$ way.

It's also against PayPals TOS to ask the customer to pay the fees. You can charge a 'handling' fee, but honestly most people rather pay the .30+ more for the item & pay actual shipping.
