A type of string art. They use to do it on boards with nails around the outside.

so from there you would just make your points on a circle instead of a right angle.
I'd say if you use that diagram but loop it you'd get it right... also to get the multiple colors you'd start with the first color from the top and then... after doing the first color all the way around you go lower and start the second... and repeat the process over and over... until you have all the colors you want...
