This is an easy project to pick up and put down. It might take fifteen minutes TOPS to cut the pieces, and that would be if you are being extremely precise about it. I am not great with my sewing machine, so I think it might take me half an hour to machine sew the pieces. Others in here would probably have it done in 5 - 10 minutes! It is the hand sewing that takes me time. Hand sewing the muzzle, ears, tail and arms on. Then removing an arm and the tail and re-sewing it because I placed it wrong.. I'm trying to add up total time in my head, but I put it down a lot and come back to it. Maybe 2-3 hours in total?

You two are making me blush! But thanks. You'll notice that there are no close up pictures... Especially on the heart... There is lots of room for improvement. But I am pretty proud of them

Sock
Monkeys.
I have about 10 in my closet (waiting for homes!!) and a drawer of socks wanting ot be made!
Trust me, get your hands on some red heel socks..You WILL NOT believe the difference in making them. I am converted! I may never make a 'modern' monkey again! LOL
(in fact I may destash all my socks)
The tutorial is still up for grabs if anyone wants it just email me at amy@handmadelouisiana.com

So far my favourite has been the regular ol' work sock. I'm still working on getting my hands on red heeled ones (it has become an obsession!!!!). But regular work socks are great. Apparently Canadian sock monkeys are 'supposed' to be made out of plain work socks (the grey ones with the white heel and toe and a red stripe near the top). I saw a pack of four at Walmart the other day for $10. They'd be a bit smaller because they were in the ladies dept. I didn't check the men's.

Uhm, hmm! See what you started. Half the population is on a mad search for monkey socks!

I've heard this, too, but... if you are unable to find exactly what you're looking for...I like to bend the rules & try something totally off the wall!

When I was at Walmart last week, there were some in the men's dept. for the same cost, but were unsatisfactory for me. I'll have to have a peek at the one's in the women's dept. & maybe, just maybe, the 'right' socks will pounce off the hook for me!

Real sock monkey socks (I dont know about monkeys of Canadian descent LOL) are made from "Original Rockford Socks" I have to look up the link but I buy several pairs at a time. They are not REAL original red heel sock monkeys unless they are Original Rockford socks.
Thus ends your sock monkey history for today
(the monkey in my avi is an original rockford)

Thank you Professor!
(just for the record, I knew that! I learned quite a bit when I was searching for directions!) My friend is going back to the States in mid March, so hopefully she'll be able to get me some then! *fingers crossed*
I've seen mini socks (I think they are still Rockford, but the heel is white) I was hoping for a cute mini-minkey when I made the blue one in my "too many" post. The sock I chose had wayyyyyyyyyy too much stretch

This past weekend I stopped at Dollar Tree, Dunham's Sports, MC Sporting Goods, Meijer, Family Farm & Fleet and Big Lots. Nobody has them. Family Farm & Fleet had some with a white heel a big thick red stripe on the bottom and a 1/2" wide horizontal stripe across the top of the heel. They looked a little goofy.
I'm wondering if they only put them out on the shelves in the fall for hunters and people who are out in the cold a lot.
Does it take one sock or two to make a single sock monkey? Kohl's has the yellow toe/heel socks. I wonder how they would look as a sock monkey. Maybe for spring or Easter?
I love the monkey you made for your husband. The ears are so cute!

Thanks for the info! May have heard that somewhere in the past, but as you age your brain tends to get like a computer without enough gigs! Had an original that someone else made, probably made 40 years ago; ended up donating it last time I moved. Now, wish I'd kept it so I could show you! Have done little research on monkeys of 'Canadian descent' ; I think the Hudson's Bay used to sell them, will have to get someone to check it out for me. Still hunting...

I can't believe all the searching you did! Is that because now you want to make one too, or is it so I can give my friend a bunch of potential stores?
I can't picture yellow. The heel makes both the mouth and the bum.
A sock monkey uses a pair of socks. One for the body and legs and the other for the arms, ears, tail and ears. (at least with my directions, I think I'll email mamaslittlemonkeys and ger her directions and see what, if anything, the difference is) Mine came from here: http://www.sockmonkey.net/How_To_Mak...ck_Monkey.html
and there is another, slightly different one here: http://tipnut.com/projectfiles/redsockmonkeypattern.pdf I am pretty sure that this second link is instructions for the very first, original Rockford Red Heel sock monkey. (I'd love to get my hands on a copy of the book on that page, even a photocopy!)
Those two links were my favourites out of all the searching I did. I'm going to try the original version if I ever get the "real" socks. I think that is fitting.
I mean WHEN I get my socks!!!
I'm going to have to take a look at "Walli's" ears.... (Hubby named him Walli -pronounced "Walleye" like the fish. )
