Sock monkeys were originally made from Rockford Red Heel socks. The red heel gives the monkeys a red mouth and bum.
These socks seem to be "an American thing" because I am having the hardest time getting my hands on some! (Although I will have two pairs on Saturday because my cousin is coming for a visit and she got me a pack!!!!) They look like this (they also come in brown, which is what I'm getting):

I have 3 pairs of "traditional Canadian" worksocks too. Like this:

My niece has requested a sock monkey for her birthday in June.

My dear friend, who I have been friends with since the age of fifteen -and she was my maid of honour, sent me a message a little while ago asking me how to make a sock monkey. Her son had seen mine on Facebook and wanted Mom to make one for him. She is having problems with her hands at the moment so she couldn't make him one. He decided he was going to make one himself! Mom was able to help a tiny bit, but he did it almost all on his own. He's 8. I can't resist posting his sock monkey! I didn't even ask. I hope he doesn't mind. Remember, an eight year old boy who (to the best of my knowledge) hasn't sewn anything before made this. Isn't it adorable?

I just love it! You have no idea how proud he is. I'm honoured that mine was his inspiration. He's got two people asking for one (gramma and auntie) I haven't got the heart to ask him what the accessory is. I've asked his mom quietly in a private message. I'll let you know when I know.

He makes me smile. I had to share.

I got such a kick out of this. He did a great job and he should be proud of it.

What a sweet little guy he is!

Thanks for posting the picture!

I love the Blue Heather red heel socks (the originals were brown..fox river brought back the blue along time ago). I just love using the rockfords...they are so strong and sturdy compared to the 'modern' socks I was using.
man ya'll are getting me so in the mood to make a sock monkey again!

Did anyone see the commercial with the human-size sock monkey in it? It was so funny.

Can't remember what product they were advertising. I know it wasn't sock monkeys. lol. Maybe cars? It was on HGTV tonight.
