Default Ceramics with Kids?

Our kids love clay. They love to shape things. We (for the first time ever) did a Jesse tree (following the advent calendar) prior to Christmas. Each day we would read scripture starting in Genesis 1 and leading up to Christ's birth. With the daily theme, our girls would make something with clay to go along with the bible passage of the day.

They like creating like that. It was great.

How does ceramics and pottery compare? Our girls are ages 7 and 9...is that a good age?

Yeah, clay seems like lots of fun. I just don't know if our girls would enjoy pottery as much...

They might, once they see the finished piece.

I was in ceramics in 4th grade and as far as I can remember, I loved it. I still have the duck soap dish and kitten I made.

Good point....definitely some long term, practicality to ceramics...didn't think of that.

There's just one small problem. I can't bring myself to get rid of them, but I also have no use for them. That's alright though. It's fun to run across them once in a while.

Do you have a place nearby that offers ceramics classes or a store that lets people come and go as they please?

I think it would be fun for the whole family to make a nativity set and let the kids help with all of it, including the painting. It would be fun to get it out every year at Christmas and remember back to when they were still little.

I'm not sure ceramics manufacturers sell nativity scenes, but it seems like they would.

My children love both. For a Christmas gift for my husband we all went to a local ceramic studio and painted Starry Night on different pieces. Dish, bowl and mug. I'll post pics later. They came out really amazing. I think everyone has a natural talent for art with some practice. Ceramics brings that out. It is so easy for them to paint and make anything look really special.

I love clay too. Some of my favorite pieces that the children did are from clay. It really amazes me what they can do. All children, not just mine. I teach an art class at our homeschool co op. I am speachless when I see what they create.

OK, time for bed. Way too late. Check out my thread on balancing time. This is how I do it, by staying up way too late to get things done.

Nite all!

I started doing ceramics with my grandmother at a very young age. For the younger ones start with just some fun effects glazes. A little older they can do more detailed work. My mom still has many of the pieces I did when I was little.

Did you do this "in-house" or would you go to a ceramic studio of sorts?
