Default New Knitter.

Hello, Shelley from Ohio here, I am new to the site and also to Knitting. Any tips or pointers to get started. I just loved watching my Grandma do it. So I went and bought the stuff to get started. Now what? Any advice will be appreciated. thanks
Shelley

use coupons when buying ANYTHING you need for knitting...buying pretty yarns and needles is addictive and can get expensive

use the internet whenever possible...be it:

"how to" videos (can find on youtube or other crafting help sites) or
patterns for projects...you can save a LOT of money doing this

ummm that's all I can think of I wish I knew before I started knitting....

the one thing I wish I had learned in the beginning is how to knit continental style. Right now I'm a "thrower" which means I knit with the yarn held in my right hand. continental knitters are "pickers" and the yarn is held in the left hand. It may take a little longer to learn if you're trying to learn it on your own but it is such a time saver on those knit one purl one ribs.

also, knittinghelp.com is a great place to start! And if you have a local yarn shop... they usually offer free help if you purchase yarn from them

have to agree with this one! i'm a continental knitter because i was a crocheter first and couldn't do it the other way. check out Ravelry for additional forum discussions, groups for everything imaginable and of course PATTERNS!!!!

I haven't touched a knitting needle for ages, and I wasn't an expert when I stopped. Over the holiday I came across an adorable scarf and it lit up my interest in knitting again. After this many years, I'd consider myself a beginner again. I couldn't find the yarn specified in the pattern locally so ordered them online from Creative Fiber Art. Got my circular needles and waiting (impatiently) for the yarns. LOL.'

BTW - I started out as a "thrower" knitter but was fortunate to work with someone that used the continental method of knitting. I felt all thumbs in the beginning and now it feels very comfortable, and wouldn't think of doing it any other way.
