Default Best Paint for Plywood?

We are having a neighborhood Halloween party, and I am in charge of painting the "scenery" on the games hosted at my house (toss bean bags through a pumpkin face- eyes/mouth and fishing game- so need to paint an ocean)...

Anyway, we are building the "fronts" out of plywood, and I am wondering your suggestions on paint types?

I need to paint:
Pumpkin: white edge, large orange pumkin, green stem
Ocean: Blue and Tan plus multiple colors for fish, sea weed, etc...

Was thinking latex would be the most economical for the large areas then the cheap acylics for the details? Or anyone have a better idea?

Do I need to prime first?

The question that I would ask is, how long do you want it to last?

You can use the paint that you just mentioned and if you want it to last awhile longer, just put a coat of varnish over it.

Oh, and if you want the colors to be more vibrant, prime with white latex. And sand after the primer dries.

Whenever we did decorations like that (halloween party games, haunted house decorations, christmas decorations, etc) we just used spray paint. We would mask off the areas we didn't want painted with old newspaper and masking tape, spray paint a couple coats (anywhere from 2 - 5 depending on the porousness of the wood), and then just keep repeating. Using the newspaper and the tape, you can get pretty decent detail. Then, we just sprayed clear acrylic over everything when we were done to keep it looking fairly nice. Some of the decorations were reused for several years.

Thanks! Did the background on the ocean and the pumpkin today-

Primer coat, then latex on the ocean, and acrylic for the orange on the pumpkin... so far so good!
