Etiquette question.....
Is it wrong to see something that somebody else made on a website, and try to make it myself?
I saw a really cute craft on a site where people sell their work (it was a while ago, I forget which site it was) and I saved the picture to my computer. I want to try to make this, but I feel a little guilty!
Is there anything wrong with being "inspired" by somebody else's work and trying to duplicate it? It would be for myself. I don't sell my crafts, so it isn't like I would be trying to pass it off as an original design by me. I just got to wondering what the etiquette is here.
I know a lot of you sell on these sites. What are your thoughts?

I don't see anything wrong with it as long as you are not trying to profit from it.

There is a fine line between inspiration and copying. If this item is something that many others make its prob safe to go ahead. Obviously try ot be different fromt heoriginal item and not use their exact item.
But if this is an item no one else makes you might want to tread more carefully.
Its really a lot of gray area and up for interpretation
Now imc urious what it is..lol

It isn't anything horribly exciting. I love love, love turtles. And someone made these adorable turtle potholders.
There is absolutely NO WAY that anything I make would look like the originals! I am not great with a sewing machine.
But these were sooooooo cute and my old (storebought) potholders are sooooooo gross!

I am sure it is fine as long as you are making for yourself and not selling.

Happens all the time. We would come up with something original, and a few shows later, someone else would show up with as close a copy as they could make. Usually, they didn't have the talent to compete with us, but sometimes they did. It happens.

I don't see an issue with that and who knows you can maybe add some creativity to it and make it your own

Honestly, I don't see anything wrong with it if you are making it for yourself. I've done this many times before, and I can't imagine that many of us haven't to some degree, IMHO.

I'm not sure if you are selling for profit, but I definitely see nothing wrong with using it for inspiration to make for your own use. I've done that with a couple of things - traced clothes that I liked to make my own pattern, for instance.

I think that's the only way I do things...but I never am able to really duplicate...it's more of an 'Amy-styled' item! LOL
