I used to sharpen with a knife but had to sharpen so often that I was wasting a lot of the pencil. I keep a sharpener in my apron pocket now. For precise marking, I have a marking knife. I usually keep anywhere from 2-10 pencils in the front of my apron, and by the end of the day, I'm lucky if I have one left. I then walk around the shop and collect all of the pencils that have been left lying around. After saying earlier that there wasn't any tools that I could think of to purchase, I picked up a Leigh D4R Pro dovetail jig yesterday. So far, I really like it. Does a very nice job on a variety of joinery techniques.

Oooo. Now there's a tool worth having. I made a jig so that I could do box joints, but I've never tried dovetails.

I usually have to collect my pencils at the end of the day, too. I seem to go through a lot of pencils. I use #2 pencils because they make a dark line, but I also use carpenter's pencils when I'm working on big stuff. They haven't made a pencil sharpener yet that's decent enough for a carpenter's pencil. I've never tried a marking knife. May have to get one of those. There are times when a pencil mark is ugly.

My dad would have died and gone to heaven in that shop.

My husband would only be interested in any mechanical tools...and be CLUELESS on the rest..
TELL me you have that shop and its contents insured! Its awesome!

Of course it is insured. The building is also alarmed and has heavy security bars on the window and double locks on the door.

I think every guy that has every seen it has loved it. It's quite overwhelming because there are so many tools packed into a small space. In years to come, I would like a bigger shop. By years to come, I mean when I retire.

I'd trade my craft "room" for your non-craftroom and time! what a lovely shop.
