Default Wood smoothing via sanding help

Hello,
I'm new to crafting I need some help....I wanted to start making music boxes and I was wondering what techniques to use for sanding (Do I start with high grit and then go to low grit) things like that

Yes start on low grit and work up to high grit. Always go with the grain not across or against it.
