Default How do I cover boxes with fabric?

Hmmm . . .maybe this should go in the crafting forum. But . . . I have a bunch of ice cream containers that are GREAT for storing elastic, snaps, etc. I want to cover them. I'm thinking of either glueing fabric or making very fitted drawstring bags. The problem I'm having is figuring out what shape to cut the fabric. The boxes are shaped like this, with the bottom being narrower than the top. Sooo, how do I figure out the shape?:icon_confused:

Also, any thoughts on sewing vs. glueing?

i would use glue, and really wet it down with it. then kinda form the fabric to hug the container. youll want to precut the fabric to the measurements of the container, but when you go to put it on you might get some slight crinkles cause of the funky shape of the containers. i would definatly try it out though, it could be cute. try it with elmers glue first, maybe slightly water it down to spread it better. then once it adhears,if you like it and its really stuck, try modge podge over it for the glossy look.
you can have alot of fun with that, and its awesome that youre recycling!

....and, to add to merandus' post, it might be a good idea to scuff up the container with a piece of sandpaper first to give the glue a better surface to adhere to. These are plastic containers, right?

Could you also possibly use fabric stiffener to make it stiff and more sturdy?

Great ideas, everyone! Hadn't thought about scuffing the plastic, nor did I think regular old Elmers would work! Off to give it a try. I'll try to post pics once I'm done! Thanks, ladies!

I cover lots of stuff using Elmers Glue diluted with a little water; if you don't want to worry about turning over or finishing edges, glue a bit of trim on last to cover anything you don't want visible. You can also brush polyurethene onto the fabric after the elmers has dried for a nice, glossy waterproof finish. Finally, if you get too many plastic buckets and just want to be rid of them, donate them to your nearest farmers market; vendors love them to display their produce . . . or at least I do! Have fun!
