Default Lengthening boys' shorts

I have a couple of pairs of denim and khaki shorts for my 3 year old son that have a lot more wear in them. I bought some pirate and flame fabric to sew to the bottoms but I don't know how to go about it without making them girly. Any suggestions?

Well you have 2 options... one simply ad a 1.5"-2" border at the bottom or add a 3"-4" border that can be rolled up into a 1.5"-2" cuff. I think fabric choice & the style of the shorts would justify whether or not they are girly.

To avoid hemming I would cut the piece the width of the bottom edge+ seam allowence. Example if laid flat they are 4" wide on the bottom edge & you use a .5" seam allowence I would cut them 9" & then 2X the finished length you want + seam allowence (remeber you have to add this to each edge)... so if you wanted to just do a 2" border with .5" seam allowence you would cute 2 pieces 9" X 5". Working with one piece sew the 2 short ends together with the good sides together & the wrong sides out. Press the seam & then with the wrong side facing you fold the top edge of the tube town to the wrong side of the bottom edge & press. You should not have a 2.5" tube that has the good side of fabric on both sides. Then with the fold close to the crotch slide over the leg & match the 2 raw edges of the border to the existing hem. Pin & sew together! Flip the border & topstitch!! You will probably need to try this to see how it looks... if you like it you will need to cut the hems off first. For the cuff do the same with the larger piece & then just fold up!

I hope this makes sense! I have only done it to pants with flannel cuffs, so I'm not sure 100 how it would look on shorts.
