Default Hand Carved Wands

My son loves to carve wood. He is presently just using his swiss army knife. It's difficult for him to work with it and takes a long time. Does anyone who carves have resources for tools for carving wood. Used would even be better because they would be less costly. Thanks.

Someone asked to see his wands. He sells them for $5

Depends on whether he wants to hand carve or power carve.

For hand carving I use a Flexcut bench knife. It holds an edge real nice and feels good in the hand.

For power carving, get a Dremel. The kits are cheap, about $50 for a starter kit.

Thanks, I will check them both out. He likes sitting outside and carving. He finds it very relaxing.

How old is he? A Dremel is a good tool for working in wood, although it takes a steady hand. When I was working with the Cub Scouts, I had them work on carving soap. It gave them good practice working with different carving tools and it is easier to work with. Ivory Bar Soap is the easiest to work with. The shavings can be put into an old stocking to be used or even melted down and remolded into new bars of soap. You can get a little beginners kit of hand carving tools from most any craft store - if they don't have them in the wood section, look in the clay section. Although if you work with soap, you can use toothpicks for the finer details. You can use different soaps for different colors also. I have used Ivory and Irish Spring. The Irish Spring is a bit firmer and a little more difficult to work than the Ivory, but it holds the finer details a little better.
