Default How to paint over stained wood without it coming off.

Currently working on refinishing oak bourbon barrel heads. I've done a couple with no problem but now the paint peels off. I use a template to paint a design and when I pull it off it pulls a lot of the paint off. I can't peel the template off right away because it usually takes two coats so that's not an option. I'm using Behr (acrylic) paints in flat or satin. I can't use gloss or semi. Any help would be appreciated.

Hmm. I am honestly not sure here. I had the same issue when I was painting wooden miniatures. Acrylic paint just couldn't hold well. It would chip off. I even tried spray paint and it didn't work either.
