Spoon with hollow handle
1 Attachment(s)
I had fun making this one. I've had this on my to-do list for almost a year. Once I figured out how to make hollow spirals, I knew I'd do a spoon.

A contest came up on facebook in a carvers group and I had to try it. I just finished it today. The contest doesn't end until March 26, so it will be awhile before I know who wins, but what the heck. It was fun to make.

That turned out nice. Hope it does well in the contest!

Now THAT is cool! I've never seen anything like it. Good job pinokeeo!

That is very cool Pinokeeo! I love that. Was it difficult? Is it usable, or does the hollowness compromise the strength in the handle? (I hope you know what I am asking, because it isn't coming out very well!!!!)

It was designed to be decorative only. Any time you make something hollow like this, it's going to be at least a little bit fragile. This one is quite sturdy, but I don't think it would hold up to repeated use.

Now that's fancy! You're just spitting out awesome spoons left and right. How many hours would you say it took?

Also do you ever carve anything into the carvings you've done? I guess what I'm asking is now that you've got an awesome spoon do you leave it alone or do you keep going? I often have trouble deciding wether or not to leave well enough alone or to keep going and hope I don't destroy the things I've made by additional fooling about.

Well, first of all, I didn't keep track of hours spent on this one. Two reasons. Number one, I'm still healing from my surgery and moving incredibly slowly and number two, it's for a competition and I wanted it to be perfect or as near to it as I could get.

As for adding to the carvings, once I carve a spiral, I don't usually do anything except maybe add something to hang on the inside of it. I don't try to carve more into it because it is already fragile and messing with it could break it. That doesn't mean it will break if you touch it. It just means that I'm really tough on the wood when I'm carving, and rough handling can break it.

If I carved more into it as I go along, it would work out just fine, but I've never planned for it that way. I might have to keep that in mind for a future piece.

Well, I'm excited. Out of all the awesome spoons that were submitted for the contest, mine actually won in my class and category. You can see all of them here.
