Default Beer-Battered Onion Rings

3 Large onions
1 cup beer
2 cups all-purpose flour
salt and pepper to taste
6 cups canola oil for frying

Directions:
1. Slice onions into thick rings.
2. Whisk beer into flour to make batter. Lightly season with salt and pepper.
3. Deep-fry in hot oil until golden brown then drain on paper towels.

For the dip
I use mayonnaise, sour cream, parsley, coriander, and lemon juice. Just mix them all together.

The onion rings came out so crispy. We had these for appetizers.

Those sound quite yummy! I'd probably stick to a zesty dip (mayo, horseradish, ketchup and paprika, onion powder..) I will definitely have to give these a try!

I like to experiment on different dips. One dip that I like so much on fried food is: mayo, minced garlic, salt and pepper.

Okay, so here's a question. Why beer? What is it about the beer that makes the batter good. Is the the alcohol or the taste of the beer. Or maybe the amount of carbonation. I'm asking because, coming from a guy who doesn't drink, I'm wondering if non-alcoholic beer would work just as well. Any thoughts?

Beer helps to create lighter crust.

Kenbo, it is the yeast in the beer, actually....

Yummy! I'm going to try these. We used to have a restaurant around here named Mr. Fables. They had the best onion rings.

A lot of places only serve the breaded rings. I don't care for those.

I have a special sauce I use. It's red and it comes pre-mixed. They also give it out in little packets at the drive thru at McDonald's & Burger King.

Don't ask for it in a restaurant in Paris though. It's an insult to the . Never been there, but that's what I was told.

Thanks!

Barb

Don't worry, Kenbo. After you cook the beer, in this case fried, the alcohol content will be gone. You will no longer taste the beer in it.

Don't get me wrong, I like beer but I only drink non-alcoholic beer because I don't drink. I'm just wondering if non-alcoholic beer will work for this recipe, that's all. I'm just going to have to try it I guess.

The flavour remains when cooking with alcohol. The alcohol itself evaporates.
I love onion rings. No sauces required!
