I've cooked with alcohol a few times. It works a lot better if you don't mix it in with the food.

Agreed! Although I LOVE the depth a decent wine gives to soups and stews! MMMMM!!! But what works great is if you save a little for "tasting" once you've dumped in most of the bottle! I always leave a glass!

Have you ever read the recipe that's being written by someone who's cooking and tasting the wine or whiskey? It's hilarious. I have it around here somewhere. If I find it, I'll post it.

Luv2Bcrafty, what kind of onions do you use for the recipe? I'm sure any kind will work, but is there one that tastes better than the others? My husband bought some sweet onions today, so I'm going to make onion rings later on.

Welllll.....

They didn't turn out so good, but I think I'll try vegetable oil next time, instead of canola. Later this week.

Well why didn't they turn out??

Yeah it's great when I start out sipping the wine and then add some and then sip some and then add some more.... Especially when the rest of the meal isn't prepared yet LOL..
For soups I LOVE to carmelize the onions then add garlic, carrots, celery and herbs. Then add the wine of choice to deglaze and dump in. Add water and add more wine to keep it rich... YUM!

Well, it was taking 12-15 minutes for them to turn golden brown, so I turned the heat up a little more and they cooked a little faster, but the canola oil made the house smell bad. Plus, I needed to add something to give them some flavor. Probably needed more salt and pepper in the batter.

I'll try them again though. With the exception of the problem with the oil, they were very quick to make.

Wine soup? lol. What kind of wine do you use? Not that I know anything about wines.

Try using olive oil. It makes everything else taste better. Just a thought.

I wonder if you had the heat to low. They should have cooked up quickly. Was you oil old? Our deep fryer smells a little more when the oil needs changed. We always use canola... I can't see that alone being the problem. But then again, I'm not a good cook....so what do I know.

It was a new bottle of canola oil. I think I did something wrong though. How could onions, flour, oil, salt, pepper and beer not taste good together?

You can re-use the oil? How do you store it?
