I learned the hard way that me experimenting is a BAD idea. I hate cooking, but love baking. I just don't have the understanding of what needs to go into a sucessful recipe... and proportions and all..... I just follow recipes and only make minor, insignificant changes (like rice krispies instead of cornflakes)!

I usually decrease the sugar & oil by 25% & never have an issue.

I read that you can replace 1 cup of oil with 1 cup of applesauce. I'll try it in a recipe sometime and let you know if it's true.

I've done that, but only in pancakes, comes out yummy!
