Default Cooking entry for board challenge-ice cream

Ok, this is an old recipe that I just pulled out of archives. I changed it slightly from the original. It's an old fashioned ice cream, made with fresh farm eggs.

Here's my recipe:

2 1/4 Cups sugar
1/4 cup plus two tablespoons flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 cups whole milk
2 cups half and half
4 eggs, beaten
4 cups whipping cream
2 tablespoons vanilla extract (I use Madagascar vanilla)

Mix sugar, flour and salt in a saucepan. Gradually add milk and half and half. Cook over medium heat for approximately 15 to 20 minutes, or until mixture gets slightly thick, stirring constantly.

Gradually stir about a cup of hot liquid into beaten eggs.Add egg mixture into remaining hot mixture, stirring constantly. Cook for one minute and remove from heat.

Refrigerate for two hours. Combine whipping cream and vanilla in a very large bowl. Add chilled mixture, stirring with a wire whisk to completely blend. Freeze in your ice cream freezer according to your instructions.

The farm fresh eggs make the ice cream batter look slightly yellow, but the ice cream freezes hard and is very tasty. And just for the record, I did not eat all of this ice cream. It was shared all around.

It's too rich and sweet. After sampling the first bites, I knew that I would have to eat it in small quantities. I made a whole gallon and put it in containers in the freezer.

Although, my partner may eat it all. She loves ice cream.

Wow! Your ice cream maker creates a huge batch! Mine just makes a litre at a time. So, maybe I wouldn't be able to eat it all myself, but if I lived close to you, you can be sure I would come over and help!!!!

I may have to add ice cream ingredients to next week's shopping list now...

Yeah, I have one of the old ice cream makers that you have to put the ice and salt in. Still better than the old crank kind.

And I'd share my ice cream with you. We sure have a bunch of it.
