Default Do You Eat Organic?

We are a family of 7 who are vegetarians and eat organic whenever possible. I think it really makes a difference in our health. Our children especially rarely get sick. When they do get a cold or a virus, they get better much quicker than most of their friends. I find that organic food is much tastier. People say that they can't buy organic because it is too expensive. I see prices much lower than they use to be. Most major grocery stores are carrying organic now. There are sales most weeks in most stores. So we shop by what is on sale most times. We buy carefully and try to never waste. I think in the long run even if the food may cost more we spend less on Dr. visits.

I wish we could eat more organic items. I try to buy it when possible. I keep talking about our local grocery chain, sorry, lol...they have one larger store in the middle of town that carries more organic items than the other stores. When I'm in the area I'll stop and see what I can find.

Unfortunately, in general, buying organic is SO much more expensive around here. I think it really depends on where you live what the prices are like. I have noticed that the stores are carrying a little bit more, and a little bit more. We do have a "health food" store in town, but it's out of the way (for me) and the prices and selection are not any better than anywhere else. Again...unfortunately!!

We're also a vegetarian family, and I'd say I buy at least 75% organic. I know it's more expensive, but after having our son, I just felt it was worth it. Plus, I'm lucky that we have a great natural foods store nearby, so it's easy to have a lot of organic options to buy.

One of my biggest annoyances is how it's more expensive to eat healthy - so frustrating! People shouldn't have to sacrifice quality of food and health in order to eat healthy! So since we can afford to buy organic, I'm happy to support the industry - hopefully it will eventually change. Two great books that kind of discuss this are The Omnivore's Dilemma, and Animal Vegetable Miracle - I loved them both, and the discussed the current food industry. Very interesting!

Yeah, I try to eat organic if possible, but that's very hard. You can buy it sometimes at the grocery store, but even then, who knows whether it's really organic, you know? My family does a garden, so that really helps, 'cause we know exactly what we've put on the plants. But again, we don't know how the seeds have been treated... It's really tough sometimes to eat right. But I agree, my family rarely goes to see the doc. and I hardly ever take medicine, only if I can't get a fever down like when I had pig-flu last year. A friend of mine feeds her family organic when she can, and by changing their diet she's cured her kids from asthma! And my grandma did the same thing. She'd had asthma all her life, really, really bad, and then corrected her diet and now she's fine. I really can't believe it... but it's true. It's incredible the difference a change in your diet can make.

I am buying more organic and trying not to get too much processed food anymore. I have a really bad allergy to food that is processed or has additives in it. It makes me itch something awful.

I don't buy organic too often... I understand some of the benefits. Although recently we bought some RAW organic milk! It was absolutely amazing! I suggest it to all if you can get some! It is so awesome! No aftertastes, just sweet freshness!
Other than that we don't buy organic too often. It's too expensive. I mean, I'm currently working at steering DH away from crappy fast food. We'll do Subway and places like that. But I try to get him away from McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's.. He still craves it and I think he always will. It's a challenge too since we drive for a living. I generally pack salads and snacks, sandwiches and such. But, sometimes it's not enough or we don't have the time. so then we need to pick something quick..

Anyhow, I think for now I'm focusing on just eating healthier all around. We really can't afford to buy organic seeing as I find it hard some weeks to buy our vegetables and fruits and not go over budget these days. Most weeks we buy the basics: milk, yogurt, lettuce, carrots and oranges and bread. Onions, potatoes and garlic when we're out.. A few other things here and there, but not much.

Out of curiousity, for those that drink organic milk how much do you pay for a gallon, and how much is it compared to regular milk? Here, the organic is almost double the price and the regular is high enough to begin with! 6.69 for organic vs 3.29 for regular...

For the organic raw milk I got from a farm it was $4.00/gallon... Around here it seems to be about the same in the supermarket. But it's about 3something/gallon for regular...
