Default Monkey Bread

This is some addicting stuff. It's not the canned biscuit variety either, it uses a yeast bread dough. Totally worth it!! Confession -- dh and I ate half of it over the course of about 15 minutes! Eek. And it makes a big pan. The oldest kiddo would only take one bite. The youngest loved it. Of course my little monkey would like monkey bread, lol!!

It starts with this Martha Stewart Recipe.

Then, I tried some of the tips found on this post at Angry Chicken.

And made some of my own changes.

Instead of mixing the nuts into the coating, I just drizzled some butter in the bottom of the bundt pan and put the nuts just in the bottom. Makes it easier if there are some non-nut-lovers in the household (you could also leave out the nuts completely).

I did add 1/2 tsp cinnamon to the dough itself when mixing. Love cinnamon.

And I used butter instead of shortening in the dough...just because I felt like it!

I mixed the melted butter, cinnamon and brown sugar for the coating, like Angry Chicken suggested. It worked okay, however I think I prefer to do it the regular way of coating the dough in butter, and then the cinnamon sugar mixture. Maybe. I think either way would work just fine.

I didn't bother making the icing. It was plenty sweet enough on its own, IMO. That, and my kitchen was messy enough, LOL.

Be warned, this does make a stickier dough. So don't think you've done something wrong.

Seriously. Try this. I was blog-hopping this afternoon, and somehow wound up on the Angry Chicken site, and found the monkey bread post. I don't know if it's because I am pregnant (what I blame most things on, lol) or what but I just had to make this today!!

I have never had monkey bread. In fact I had never heard of it until we moved to South Jersey. They sell it on the boardwalk in Ocean City. "Monkey Bread ?"I thought what could that be? On closer look it looked to me like cinnamon buns. There is always a big line and I see everyone eating it. I must try it now that you say it is so good. They don't sell it here with nuts, I believe but that sounds really good. Are they like cinnamon buns? I make those and they are so good too.

Thanks for the recipe!

Those sound so yummy mamakaty. And it's okay to blame it on the pregnancy.

I ended up having to make monkey bread Christmas morning. I had 2 bags of Rhode's frozen rolls. They were just little balls of dough when I took the bags out of the freezer Christmas Eve. Thought I'd put them in the fridge over night and bake them in the morning before going to my mom's for dinner.

When I opened the refrigerator door Christmas morning.... SURPRISE!! Not only had they thawed, but they all expanded to the point where the bags were about to burst.

I put some melted butter, brown sugar and cinnamon in a 9x13 pan and used scissors to cut the dough into little pieces. I rolled them around in the butter/brown sugar and drizzled a little butter on top. Baked it until it was golden and served it for breakfast.

I mixed some cream cheese, confectioners sugar and a little milk together to pour over it when it was done baking.

Everyone ate it and said they liked it. The baby had it on his jammies, hands, arms, face and in his hair, so he must have enjoyed it more than the rest of us. lol.

I have been wanting to make this for years! I even went out and bought a bundt pan just for it. I still haven't tried it. I'm not going to right now because it would probably be a million weight watcher points per bite and I'm trying to lose. Hopefully I will once I'm down. LOL Maybe I'll lose a couple extra and then make this my goal treat!

Yes! Think of it like pull-apart cinnamon rolls.

Barb, sorry your bags of dough were about to burst, but at least you got something yummy out of it!!

question though.....I don't have a bundt pan do you think a regular bread pan would work?

I've made it in a bread pan and a cake pan as well! Just make sure there is enough room for the dough to rise!
