Default Popcorn!

Popcorn, popcorn, how do you make your popcorn?

When I was a kid I made it in a saucepan on top of the stove. I've tried several kinds of electric popcorn poppers. Never found one I liked.

The air popper made it taste like styrofoam. If I remember right, even butter and salt couldn't help that.

I bought a plastic one that works in the microwave. Surprisingly, that one makes great popcorn. But it needs special little 'cups' for the bottom of it and I can't always find them at the store.

The bags of microwave popcorn are okay sometimes. But I can't find one brand that I really like.

So, 9 times out of 10 I make it on top of the stove like I did when I was a kid. With white popcorn, not yellow. Yellow has too many hulls. But most people I talk to only like the yellow.

How do you make yours?

I use a version of the whirley pop!! Except I got mine at a garage sale for $3. LOL.

Anyway, I grew up making it on top of the stove too (gas stove, could never get it right on an electric stove...) My dh always wanted to get the microwave popcorn, and it was okay but not what I remembered "good" popcorn tasting like! I really, really wanted to try the Whirley Pop, but it was summer and couldn't find one in the store. Found one at a garage sale, brought it home and cleaned it up, made the first batch of popcorn, and dh finally agreed with me that it makes really, really good popcorn (we have an electric stove, and it works really well on it).

For the popcorn, I usually use the yellow Orville Redenbacker (spelling??) that I can find in the grocery store, but I've thought about ordering other kinds to try (or looking to see what the fancier grocery store has). My family loves popcorn!!!

That's one popper I haven't tried. I'm going to look for one at a yard sale too. It looks like it makes a big batch too.

I never had luck making it on an electric stove either.

My daughter is allergic to so many things, that the only way we make it is from the plain kernals in a jar and cook it right on top of the stove in a pot with a little bit of corn oil. Can't use butter (dairy allergy), so we just top it with salt and sometimes garlic powder. It's much healthier anyway!

Have you tried making it in the microwave in a brown paper bag? It's the least expensive way I have tried. Use butter flavored salt or any seasoning you like - Weight Watchers used to have a butter spray that tasted good.

I like the black gourmet popcorn because it almost all pops and tastes better but I live in IN and I can buy it locally. Maybe you can't get it where you are. ~Lynn in IN
