Default DSLR camera question

I have the Canon T1i and the standard lens it came with. I mainly take pics of my family, but I want to do more & learn more about photography. Is there a lens that you would suggest I invest in as a newbie or should I stick with what i have for now?

I don't have a Canon, but I would suggest a 50 mm 1.4 or 1.8 lens. Prime lenses are so nice and with lower Aperatures you can get in a lot more light. I have the kit lens, a 55-200 mm lens and my prime 50 mm1.4 and that one rarely ever leaves my camera. Love it! They are relatively inexpensive too. good luck!

I second the 50mm 1.8 Its a great lens and hardly ever leaves my camera. It can take some getting used to shooting at 1.8 though. It runs about $100 just about anywhere. Adorama.com, bhphoto.com and amazon are all great places to check.

$100 is not too bad since I plan to use this camera for a very long time

There are lots of great lens and depends on what you want to spend. The 50mm 1.8 and good, and cheap. I love my 50mm 2.5 Macro (sold my 50mm 1.8 because I love my macro more). 85mm 1.8 is fab, and the Tamron 28-75mm 1.8 is another that is fab.

With the 50mm being only $100, I have had one break on me. It was never droped or anything the focusing just locked up and wouldn't work. But it is cheap to replace.
