Default Help with close ups and flash..

I have a Cannon Powershot A620 camera, and I have had it for a while, and can't figure out how to take close ups of things that are light colored so you can actually see them? The flash always washes them out and if I turn it off then things are to dark (well at least the way I have figured it out.)...

I dont' even know where to begin to work on this issue... what should I be looking to do... if I have a start then I can at least know where to read in my manual!

Currently I use the dummy "kids and pets" setting to keep up with my kids and pets... and the closet preset that sort of works is "foliage" but I know there is a better way!

Thanks a bunch!

I have the same camera and I use the exact same settings to take pictures. The only thing that works for me is the foliage setting as well. This is a great question and I would love to hear some other opinions on this.

try using the macro button (the little flower under the set button) and experiment with and without flash.

Ditto that. I often wind up taking a ton of pictures just to get the one that turns out right. I've found, though, that the macro button usually works well, and sometimes I need the flash while others I don't. I usually just have to experiment, like she said.

Natural lighting is better, but I know not always possible (and dependent on what you're taking a picture of too!!).

Sorry if I'm not online much...playing with the new baby has cut into my computer time!! If you need anything, please send me a PM and I will try to get back to you soon! Have a great crafty day!
