Default Photographing Children

I'd like to hear some hints and suggestions people have to get good pictures of kids when they're being active.

On the box my camera came in, it said it takes the picture right when you press the button (not in those exact words). It must have been a misprint, because when I push the button down to take the picture, the kids are usually half-way across the room before the picture is taken.

Sweet picture Elaine.

Barb, have you looked at the camera manual? I'll bet that there are a gazillion different settings and that one of them will snap the picture instantly.

Photographing a child is really a tough job as they always keep changing their position. I would like to suggest you that get the children involved in some kind of activity and then take their picture. Hopefully you will get the best shots.

I've decided that photographing children is a little like herding cats, lol. At least my children! I usually wind up taking a ton of pictures, and not that many of them "turn out" that well. But it's not going to stop me anytime soon! I've been playing with the settings on my camera a little more, trying to figure it out and take better pictures. I agree that when they're not looking you often get really good shots. But sometimes I just want a good pic of their smiling faces!!

I agree though, that there is sure to be a setting that will help the picture take faster. However, I returned two different cameras before settling on the one I have now because no matter what, the picture quality was just poor IMO...

Sorry if I'm not online much...playing with the new baby has cut into my computer time!! If you need anything, please send me a PM and I will try to get back to you soon! Have a great crafty day!

My favorite pictures that I've taken of kids are the ones I've taken outside before sunset or on a day when a storm is coming or has just passed. Those are the ones I get the most compliments on too.

The lighting during those times is incredible. Even a not-so-great point and shoot camera can get great pics with that kind of lighting.

One of our older digitals, you had to push the button 1/2 way down, then it would focus/lock in and then you could push the button all the way down. I like to take their pictures when they aren't really paying attention. They somehow look sweeter and not poised! I've got a couple who as soon as they SEE the thing get all "hammy" and goofy!!!

If you go thru the setting for the picture taking on your phone.. You should be able to take 3 at a time (burst 3 ) or a continual shot. This is the best, but you can only do it outside. You just stand still and press a button. You end up with 100's of bad pictures but you end up with some really good ones.

I have learned if my kids are playing the best way to get a shot of them is to use the sports feature on my camera. It has a quick shutter speed and can usually catch the kids before the step out of my shot. I figured if it worked for taking pictures during a hockey game it would have to work on 3 kids. LOL
