I am majoring in photography right now but I have been into it for about 8 years and I have gotten paid for it for the past 2 years. I photograph a high school prom every year and I plan to do some senior portraits next year.

Lighting: One light with soft box to left of subject

Lighting: sunlight

Do you think Cannon is a better camera than the Nikon or about the same?

I prefer it because I have always used Canon (& invested in a lot of money in canon mount lenses) though I would not say one is better than the other. I recommend looking at both and learning where the settings are and just get whichever that works for you. I use both though because my dad has a Nikon and if I need a extra camera for a job I will borrow his. Also since you were doing film photography if you had m42 or I think it was F mount lenses then you can get a adapter and use them on your digital camera you will just have to manually focus and manually set the aperture on the lens which shouldn't be too hard for you since you have to do that with film anyway. I use m42 lenses on my DSLRs and they are so much cheeper and as you can see in my photos work just as well.
