Default Crocheted Rag Rugs

I've crocheted rugs out of recycled t-shirts until I depleted my stash. I want to make more crocheted rugs and wonder if I can recycle other kinds of fabric or would it be best to make braided rugs until I have more t-shirts to use?

You can crochet rugs out of cotton fabrics. Again, look on the web. There are many tutorials.

You can use old sheets also. If you don't have any you can find them in thrift shops and garage sales.

Yes, I use a lot of old sheets. And because they come in a variety of rich colors, your rugs can be any color combination you choose.

I've started stripping sheets and making balls. I love that I can get so much more of the same design and color to work with from a sheet compared to a t-shirt. I find sheets easier to crochet with if I reduce my tension just a bit.

Also try using a larger hook. I made my own hooks from 3/8" and 1/2" dowels. They work better than traditional metal or plastic hooks.

Great idea to try and make my own hooks! You just widdle one end of the dowel?

How to you know how to whittle the hook shape and then what size would the hook be equivalent to?

You can whittle the hook, but I use a dremel to get a smoother rounded hook end.

I use a metal hook for a model and modify it to the size of the dowel I'm shaping. As for size, I have a chart that shows what each size is, but I just make a hook that suits whatever I'm doing. If it's the wrong size, I just do another one in a different size.

Right now I'm using one in 1/2 inch dowel, which I think is equivalent to a "q" in the metal ones.

I dont know about for rugs but you can also buy fleece from the fabric store when its dirty cheap (2.99 a yard or under 5 a yard) and cut it into strips. I dont know that it would make a good rug but maybe it would if you put some non slip stuff underneath it?
