If you're not crazy about the colors, what about amigurumi (toys)? I know you said you can barely read patterns, but if you know how to crochet in the round, it shouldn't be too hard. It's all single crochet. If you're unsure - maybe start with an egg pattern for Easter.

Lion Brand has a lot of cute, free patterns. One of their lion patterns (http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/70...html?noImages=) is like a little square pillow. I made one in "regular" colors, and another one that I nicknamed Mint Monster, so you could really do it in any color!

Thumbs up tons of yarn

Why not use the extra yarn to make throw rugs. I have seen free patters for this that are really cute.

Hot pads are quick and easy to make. And great shower or housewarming gifts. I haved a quick pattern if you are interested that is thick enough to pick up a cast iron skillet.

It usually isn't a good idea to use acrylic yarn for hot pot holders or hot pads. I use cotton yarn for those things. However you can also make mitten, gloves, fingerless wrist warmers, totebags, purses. You can crochet a bag with a drawstrings to hold your plastic grocery bags also. Using multiple strands of yarn to give thickness and stabilty, you can crochet bowls or boxes to store stuff in. You can make plastic canvas tissue boxes using the yarn or on other plastic canvas projects.

I am under the impression that the caps that the soldiers wear under their helmets have to me made out of wool and not synthetic yarn. In my home extension group some women are making them and they were told to make them from wool.
