i plan on knitting and crocheting some wool longies and shorties for my DD .my question is what wool yarn do i buy? there are 5 gazillion types i want the cheapest i can get that will do what i need it to do.once i get good at it then i will upgrade .TIA

I think you could start with Paton's - softer than some of the "cheap" stuff, I've only used it for a hat though, I know lots of people who use it for diaper wool.
