You could put pretty much anything in them. It would depend on what you were interested in. Some of the taller/larger ones you could put pictures of you and your family at the beach and then put shells or sand dollars or driftwood. If you have pictures from camping in the woods, you could put pinecones or acorns with it.
You could also use them to showcase small craft items that you have made, or even make some abstract art with craft supplies. Stack up different colors of spools of thread - it makes an interesting art piece. Or, glue crayons against the back to make a pattern. You could leave the center blank for a picture that you've colored...
I want a shadow box to display items from my wedding. Maybe I'll get that taken care of before our 20th anniversary this summer....
Think about anything you may have collections of. I love Gremlin's ideas!

Just remembered I have a collection of old bottles of all shapes, sizes and colours. If I paint the boxes different colours I could use the bottles. They should actually fit quite well - I hope
