Default Machine Cutwork Bars

I'm trying to make a cutwork. I don't have an embroidery machine, just a regular one, and I can't figure out how to make the bars so that they won't break and pull out.

Everything I can find is using an embroidery machine, and all they do is put a water-soluble stabilizer down and sew right onto that.

Is the embroidery stitch substantially different from what my machine does that it will hold it's shape when mine don't?
