I got part for my older machine that raises the plate above the feed dogs.. but I am not sewing so well like that at all... I can't seem to move the fabric around evenly - just gets stuck in one spot or the stitches stretch out and aren't a close satin stitch any more. Tried with a hoop- didn't seem to help any...
Is this just a trial and error or are there any hints/tricks?

If you know the model of your machine, perhaps you can get a manual that will explain how to properly replace the part you are talking about. (Sometimes you can find a free copy of the manual on line by googling the name and model nuo. of the machine.) Maybe it isn't that part but the feed dogs itself, or the tension isn't correct. If you aren't sure how to tackle the problem yourself you should get an experienced sewing machine repair person.

I have the manual.... I have the part... I have gotten a hoop in there, but without the feed dogs moving the fabric I am having a hard time getting a smooth and even stitch- so just trying to figure out how you get it to slide/move around without the dogs in action? I know the newer machines have the cool gliding attachement, but I know others do applique and things without this, so just trying to figure it out
I guess you are doing machine embroidery. Is this an embroidery machine or are you trying to embroider on a regular machine using a hoop? If this is a regular machine, I would agree that it is difficult to guide the fabric in the hoop evenly. I guess it requires a lot of time and patience.

Just a regular sewing machine... old singer 257. Works great for most things .... It's probably due for a tune up soon, (I have cleaned it well and kept it oiled, but havent' dealt with the timing)... maybe it will work better after that.
My Singer is probably much older. It's a model #348 from the very early sixties, when Singer still made all thier machines (here in the US) It has served me well. I used to lift up the feeders to do darning (I never used a hoop) and I had trouble just trying to make it go in circles or back and forth, so I can understand the frustration you are going through.

Well I guess it's just the nature of the beast! I would love an embroidery machine... but not going to happen any time soon... so it's either figure this out or just use the iron applique stuff and hand sew the edges...
If you use fuseable iron on web and want to applique the edges, then you can use the zig-zag from your sewing machine. That much I have done with no sweat.
