Default Applesauce - Cinnamon Ornaments

I just came across this recipe on 'Cooks.com'. I know I made these when my girls were little, but I can't remember anything more than that about them.

Has anyone else ever tried them? Do they smell nice throughout the Christmas season? I think it would be nice to attach one to the ribbons on a wrapped gift or to hang on the tree.

APPLESAUCE - CINNAMON ORNAMENTS

1 c. ground cinnamon
1 tsp. allspice
1 tsp. ground cloves
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 c. applesauce

Mix dry ingredients. Add applesauce a little at a time. Mixture should have consistency of playdough. If too dry, add 1-2 tablespoons applesauce. Roll 1/4 inch thick on ungreased surface. If too sticky, sprinkle with ground cinnamon. Cut with cookie cutters. Place on level surface to dry 4-5 days. Insert fine wire at top of ornament before drying. Tie with ribbon. Yield 2 dozen.

Hmmm....I just came across this recipe too. It sure is a lot different than the first recipe.

APPLESAUCE - CINNAMON ORNAMENTS

2 lbs. cinnamon
70 oz. jar applesauce
4 oz. Elmer's glue

Place cinnamon in large bowl. Add glue and gradually add enough applesauce to get a slightly firm dough. Roll out to 3/8" to 1/2". Cut out with cookie cutters. Use a straw to make a hole in top of ornament for ribbon. Let dry at room temperature or bake at 200 degrees for 1 hour and then let dry completely.

Did I use the right kind of converter? 70 ounces = 8 ¾ cups????
And ¼ pound of cinnamon is equal to about one cup I read, so it calls for 8 cups of cinnamon!!!!! WOW!

I'm thinking that this will make the mother of all batches of dough and that you could probably scale that recipe down......... You'll still be making ornaments next July with that amount.

My youngest daughter "mass produces" ornaments almost every year to give as gifts. This (maybe the first recipe) might be a good one. Thanks! Even my older one would enjoy this, I think, because it is kind of like baking, which she loves.

Yikes! You're right about it going on until July! Your girls would have to get part-time jobs just to buy the cinnamon. lol That's a huge batch!

The 4 oz. of Elmer's glue doesn't sound right either. Some yellow glue like woodworker's use might give the beautiful bitter batter a bit of a better butter flavor. J/K

Recipe #2 sounds like it would be a good size for a fun classroom project.

Like you said, the first recipe might be a good one. I'll have to look for the recipe I used years ago. Maybe I still have it.

I wonder if some of the applesauce in the first recipe could be replaced with a little bit of Elmer's. Do you think it makes the ornaments stronger when they're dry?

I bought a big bag of cinnamon and a jar of applesauce with the intention of making these for Christmas. The jar is still in the cupboard and the cinnamon in the spice drawer. I would imagine that they would be nice any time of year though, if you have somewhere discreet to place them and don't make them in Christmas shapes. hmmm... I'll have to think about this.....

I meant to make some this past Christmas too. Where did the time go?

I will definitely be making these. But I think we will start next rainy day. If I want to have them done in time for Christmas I need to start now. LOL. My DD made a cinnamon ornament at school this year and I just loved it. I am going to do one tree with all hand made primitive ornaments and I really want the cinnamon ornaments to be part of it.

I have made these in the past and used them to decorate a mini "country kitchen" theme tree I gave as a gift. It was all mini wisks, measuring spoons, small measuring cups, and metal cookie cutters tied with ripped gingham bows. I also used a bit of raffia to hang the ornaments.

I found that using a heart and star cookie cutter allowed me to use the extra leftover ornaments in my kitchen too and yes, they smell wonderful for a long time after you make them... and just when you think there's no smell left- add just a drop of cinnamon fragrance oil and they are brand new again! I had them tied to a grape vine wreath that decorated one wall and they hung there for years!
