Has anyone ever made a scarecrow?
Help a newbie out.
I want to make a scarecrow this Halloween to have on display in my front yard. I'm not a huge holiday decorator. I like a few minimalist, tasteful and carefully chosen items but nothing gaudy, too large, or overbearing.
I'm not shooting for anything especially demonic or that would scare young children. Just a simple scarecrow. My attempts in the past have ended as utter and embarrassing failures.
Any advice, instructions, or pics would be great!

I feel ashamed that no one has responded to this question, or requested more information
Can it be moved to the How-To forum as a request for information about a project?

I made a comment in your intro where you also mentioned this saying that I've never made a scarecrow. I didn't think it was worth repeating in this thread.
I would imagine that there are two reasons that there have been no replies.
It could be that nobody has an answer for you! I know that I don't reply if I don't have anything to say, others here are probably the same. It is possible that you have hit on something that nobody here has ever done.
Or.. Since you only posted this yesterday, it is also possible that a lot of people just haven't seen it yet. Don't forget it was the weekend. And today is a statutory holiday in Canada.
Don't get discouraged. We are a helpful bunch. Really!

I know when we where younger we used to take old clothes and stuff them with newspaper and then have straw coming out of the arms and legs. Most of the time the thing would be sitting down because it was heavy, but one year we had it hanging in the tree.
These are pretty simple if you want them that way. One way to do them is to make it with some bamboo and use clothes draped on it with the head made out of either starform or something to that nature..
Hope that helped!

Okay, I'll chime in with a guys perspective. I would think that a scarecrow would be an annual event. It would be something that you wouldn't want to have to store all year long. If it were me, I would think basic, and easy to break down. My idea would be to make a cross. Nothing extravagant. Just a simple cross made of 1" X 2" lumber. The head, could just be a simple burlap sack, filled with stuffing and tied to the top of the cross. From there, dress the cross. A lumberjack coat and an old pair of jean. Then, stuff the entire thing with staw, batting or even rags or old clothes. An old straw hat and you are done. At the end of halloween, place the head in a box along with the jacket, hat and old jeans and take the cross apart. Make sure to label the pieces of the cross so that they don't get used for something else. Done.

Excellent idea Ken! You have almost three months to make one! I'll bet you have old, holey jeans, and a horrible lumberacket..... I mean an old lumberjacket. I'm sure we could come up with some type of stuffing...
I love that idea!

I was at the county fair last week and saw a scarecrow made from an old oil drum, some soda pop cans and milk jugs. It was supposed to be a horse. It was put together with PVC pipe. Pretty impressive.
The drum was the body, the soda cans were tied together to represent the legs, and milk jugs were cut off at the bottom for the feet. One of the milk jug bottoms were attached to a burlap bag to represent the head.
That's my contribution here. Not that it's worth anything, but it gives you another perspective on scarecrows.

No, I didn't think to take my camera with me. I wish I would have.
