Default Grating crayons?

Dumb question. Anyone ever tried grating crayons before? I found this fun looking idea to make a suncatcher using grated crayons and wax paper. I started grating one of the crayons...o.m.g. Big mess, and it wasn't working well! Then again, maybe I just don't have the patience today (no, I know I don't have the patience today!!). I think perhaps I need to go to the dollar store and get a cheap grater that I don't have to worry about, since I was trying to use the only grater I have in the house, lol!!

I remember doing this as a kid and it being a big mess - that`s about all I remember though - sorry I couldn`t be a bigger help!

That's funny, I had never heard of this and now I've learned about it twice this week.

Here's an idea. Do you have an old pencil sharpener you don't use? An electric one would be fastest. That should make some pretty good shavings.

I suggest using a knife to make several score lines along the length of the crayon. That'll help you get the paper off of it and it might make the shavings smaller.

Barb! We do have several pencil sharpeners. I always buy extra when they go on super sale before school starts, lol. No electric ones, but I think they would work! Great idea. We may try the project again this weekend. I gave up today!

I had a friend who had two of those pampered chef rotary graters, one for cheese and one for crayons... she was an after school care worker

I use the side of my scissors to grate crayons. That way, clean up is pretty easy. I made a suncatcher with my oldest, and it turned out to be beautiful.

I have cut them with a plastic knife - but it's really tough!

How fun! What do you do to make the suncatcher?

We never actually got ours made! But, the instructions I saw you lay down a piece of wax paper, arrange your crayon gratings in the design you want, put another piece of wax paper on top of that, cover with some newspaper and gently iron it to melt it all together. Then you can punch a hole in it, tie on some ribbon and hang it up!
