We used to do this when I was little and use them as place mats. You can trap leaves between wax paper the same way. Combining crayon shavings and leaves always made some nice finished products. I'm pretty sure we used pencil sharpeners for the crayon shavings too.

I remember doing this as a kid. Using pencil sharpener makes nice shavings. It's messy alright, but it's fun! And that's what matters to a kid. Never mind the cleaning up later.
