Thanks! I love the idea for my class with adults with developmental disabilities.

We tried the heart lei yesterday.

I made the mistake of using a hole punch that makes holes larger than the width of the end of the straw. We alternated between the straws and the hearts and when I looked down, the hearts were all against each other and the pieces of straw were laying end-to-end.

We're going to try again Monday.... but with a smaller hole punch. The kids are really looking forward to it.

Here's what one looked like when we put it together.

And here it is after it was lifted off the table.

I'm glad to hear that the kids are looking forward to it Barb, and they are not all disappointed because it didn't work. There is a valuable lesson for them here......
I'm sure that they will find a use for those hearts with the "too big" holes.

It worked out okay because we worked on them right after lunch and before nap time. So they were tired and didn't seem to care one way or another. That was lucky.

They're punched. It still took me over 2 hours to get everything punched and cut. I can't even imagine how long it would take to cut them by hand. Plus I wrapped scotch tape around the ends of the strings (like shoe laces) to make it easier for their little fingers to feed the yarn through the straws.

I made enough for 6 lei's. When I was cutting the straws, the little pieces were flying all over the place. The kids thought that was funny and they were fighting over who got to pick them up off the floor. Gotta love 'em!.

I still have most of the hearts. I might pop into McDonald's and ask if I can buy or have 10 straws from them. I think those would be thick enough to not slide through the holes. It would be easier than punching out all the hearts again.
