Found the cooked reg. play dough this is a great recipe to and it makes much more for so much less then what you pay for in the store.

Cooked Play Dough

3 cups flour
1 cup salt
6 teaspoons cream of tartar
3 cups water
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
Food coloring

Mix flour, salt, and cream of tartar in a large saucepan. Blend water and oil together in a bowl. Add to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until it thickens. Add several drops of food coloring until you get the right color. Cook for about five minutes. Take the play dough out of the saucepan and put it on a cutting board or counter and knead for a few minutes. Add flour if it's too sticky.

This play dough should last around three months if you keep it sealed in an airtight container or plastic ziplock bag. It's so smooth and fun to play with when it's still warm.

Note: you can of course divide this into small batches and color each one. Just store in a zippy bag when not in use. or a butter dish with a lid but the zippy bags keep it fresher longer in the dish with lid it will start to dry out after a few weeks.

I've made a similar recipe before but I've never colored it. When you use the food coloring does it tend to get on things?

I used to be the "Play dough Mom" when my daughter was in grade one (she is going into grade eleven now!) and I used a similar, if not the same recipe. The teacher gave me some paint to colour it with because I complained that it took a lot of food colouring to get a good colour to the dough. Paint worked amazingly well. I always added my colour to the water.
I don't remember the food coulouring getting all over things, StampCrazy. The paint didn't either.
*sidenote* my insane husband LOVES the smell of Play-Doh. Bleah!

I don't know if it would dry out, squiggles. I always made the dough and gave it to the teacher and she would let me know when she needed another batch. People used to give my kids Play-Doh as gifts so I never had a reason to make it for my own kids. I would like to think that if the paint dried it out the teacher would have said something because it was an experiment in the first place. Sorry I can't give you an experience based answer.
