My son made this as a gift for my husband. He added a little bit of sparkles to it. Dh keeps it on his desk at work. He always gets comments on it. Everyone has to shake it there own way. Some swirl it. It's a great conversation piece. Look around for interesting bottles in the store. Soda, juice, olives...

Have fun!
Cindy

Aw.
Your son must be so proud that Dad displays his work like that!

I made one with the kids yesterday. It's so neat to watch.

I used vegetable oil though. I should have used an oil that isn't as yellow.

I wouldn't suggest using a 2 liter bottle either. It's nice and big, but uses a lot of oil.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what can fit inside the bottle that will sit on top of the water but not float to the top of the oil? I'd like to find a little sailboat.

How do you think it would be if you put a quarter cup of sand in it and some tiny sea shells? It seems like the sand would stay on the bottom.

I'll try to post one in a couple minutes (translation: it'll be a half hour to 45 minutes).

I would imagine that a toy would not float between the two liquids.
I have no idea if sand would sink properly, but I think it sounds like shells might work.
You may have to conduct experiments since it doesn't look like anyone knows......

Well I wasn't off by much. It's only 6 hours later.

I think you're right Angela. I might try a little piece of wood. Maybe a wood chip from outside.

The pictures really don't do the bottle justice. I hope they don't discourage someone from trying this because it really is a fun project. It would look much much better if it had clear oil in it.

There are a bunch of bubbles in the oil. I'm not sure what's causing them.
